The Tomah Veterans Affairs Medical Center will be holding a two-day event for area Veterans on August 16 and 17, 2016.  This year, the Tomah VA has partnered with the Ho-Chunk Nation and Viterbo University to host the event at the Nursing Center, Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wisconsin.  This will be the fourth year that the medical center has held a Mental Health and Homeless Summit and the first year they have added a Veterans Benefit and Job Fair.

The Benefit and Job Fair will be held on Tuesday, August 16 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and will provide a one-stop-shop for Veterans and their families on everything they need to know from eligibility, educational benefits, free medical screenings and finding  employment.  Additionally, we will be providing an educational workshop for employers to learn about Post Traumatic Stress, the effects of combat stress on transitioning Veterans, the La Crosse Area Veterans Court and a group of Veterans to talk about their Military Veterans Advisory Board they formed at one local company.  The day will conclude at 5:30 p.m. with a Veterans Town Hall Meeting hosted by the Acting Medical Center Director.  Veterans will be able to ride the city of La Crosse municipal transit free by showing a Veterans identification card.

The Mental Health and Homeless Summit is scheduled for Wednesday, August 17, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  The theme of this year’s summit will be on “Veteran’s Families – How the Community Can Support Them”.  We are pleased to announce that we have two distinguished guest speakers, Dr. Carolyn Clancy, the Deputy Under Secretary for Health for Organizational Excellence and Mr. Don Weber, the Chairman and Founder of Logistics Health Incorporated.

Organizers anticipate having multiple booths for available with information for Veterans and their families.  The booths will be open to the public; however, pre-registration is required to attend the Mental Health Summit presentations.  For more information about the summit or for media interested in covering the event, please call the Tomah VAMC Public Affairs Office at 608-372-3971 ext. 66759 or by e-mail matthew.gowan@va.gov.

Immediate help is available at www.VeteransCrisisLine.net or by calling the Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255 (push 1) or texting 838255.
