Five area Veterans, who are gold medal winners in music, dance, drama or art contests, will join more than 100 Veterans from across the country and attend the 23rd annual National Veterans Creative Arts Festival in Fayetteville, Arkansas, October 17-23, 2011.  The list of area Veterans invited to this year’s festival is:

  • Robert Hammer, Assemblage, “Predator II”
  • Paul Strohfeldt, Knotting, “A Warrior’s Dream”
  • Dan Krehbiel, Vocal Solo Pop, Nature Boy, invited as a chorus member
  • John McCue, Solo Religious Poetry, “Dust Off,” invited as a chorus member
  • Keith Diamond, Vocal Solo Rock, “Fire & Rain,” invited as a chorus member

The festival is the culmination of a year-long fine arts talent competition in which 3,857 Veterans representing 122 VA facilities nationwide participated.

"The National Veterans Creative Arts Festival is more than a one week event," said Acting Medical Center Director Dr. David Houlihan. “It is a stepping-stone to life-long rehabilitation and friendships.  We congratulate all of our Veterans who entered this year’s competition."

Veterans will be in Fayetteville for a week of rehearsals and workshops concluding on Sunday, October 23 with a visual art exhibit and a performance gala stage show at the Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville.  Artists will exhibit their work beginning at 12:30 until 1:45 p.m.  At 2:00 p.m., the music, drama and dance performers will showcase their talent in the stage show, backed by a professional orchestra.  Country recording artist Michael Peterson will be the master of ceremonies for the show.  Peterson also hosted the event in 2010 when it was held in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

The festival is presented by the Department of Veterans Affairs, the American Legion Auxiliary and Help Hospitalized Veterans.  It is hosted this year by the Veterans Healthcare System of the Ozarks.
